The Significance of Speed in Basketball and Three Terrific Tips to Improve It

Admittedly, speed is an integral aspect of almost all sports, including basketball. It's important in basketball training as it has a significant impact on how fit you're and how well you can play.

Typical basketball moves like a fast handle, high jump, cut and run, pick and roll, fast-break run are greatly dependent on speed. Nevertheless, speed in basketball is not just limited to straight runs but also refers to back forth, spin, zig-zag, side runs, and more.

Role of Speed in the Basketball

  • Higher Jumps

Being able to increase your speed will effectively improve your plyometric skills and core strength. In other words, if you're able to run faster, you'll also be able to jump higher and dunk in the basketball game.

  • Quickness

Speed training can help increase your quickness as well, which, in turn, results in a more responsive offense and superior defense. If you improve on your speed, you will be able to perform lateral defensive moves with great ease, altering directions and...

Five Vital Reasons to Avoid Zone Defense in Youth Basketball

Zone defense essentially refers to a guarding strategy prevalent in basketball, soccer, and several other sports, where all the defensive players are required to spread across a specific area of the playground as opposed to blocking someone particular from the opponent team.

Zone defenses in youth basketball are classified into several categories based on their alignments, and they’re usually denoted by a unique combination of numerical figures. Some of the most common zone layouts are 2-3, 3-2, 1-3-1, 2-1-2, 1-2-2, and matchup zone

Admittedly, both learning and teaching how to play zone defense is a relatively simple task when the teams don’t have enough time to practice, in particular. It can also prove to be useful for players who severely lack promptness and athleticism. However, there are numerous significant disadvantages of zone defense, and today’s discussion will try to cover them in brief.

HOW TO STOP CRAMPING

Your players need to know that they must replace their electrolytes through sports drinks and also in their daily nutrition. Drinking water is critical but it is not enough.

Electrolytes are essential to every player to be able to play and train at a high level and below are the key points to get across to your players. In my years of training, we have experimented with balancing the intake of water and sports drinks for each player to determine the optimal level yet in each player’s case, the ideal amount may be slightly different.

When a player is lacking electrolytes, muscles will not function properly and cramp up as we have all seen so many times. Cramping is not only an effect of dehydration, but also of electrolyte deficiency.Drinking water can prevent overheating but won’t protect against electrolyte imbalances that hinder performance.

Key Electrolytes:

* Sodium

* Potassium

* Magnesium

* Calcium

* Chloride

#1 REASON WHY NBA PLAYERS USE SUPPLEMENTS

Supplements play a big role in sports today, as there are times when a player cannot get the necessary nutrition through food alone. It is a big industry and there are hundreds of products out there that can be used to supplement nutrition.

While we will not prescribe any particular supplement, we will note that they are just that, “SUPPLEMENTS,” and not meant to stand alone as nutrition. Players can take in more protein through a protein drink or make sure all vitamins and minerals are covered through taking them in supplement form but, again, this is to supplement what they are getting in their meals and snacks.

All players should use supplements only to compliment their solid daily nutrition. If used properly, they can be very effective, especially considering there are times when players cannot get exactly what they need to eat.

As we know, not all players have the luxury that some of the NBA pros do in having a chef to prepare the perfect meals for them. Parents are...

#1 SECRET PRE GAME MEALS FOR BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Game Day Eating

While a player’s nutrition should be solid and well thought-out every day, eating on game-days has an elevated importance to perform at a high level. Coaches and players are always looking for a perfect “pre-game meal” to maximize performance.

Theories like “carb-loading” have been used to try to improve energy levels and overall performance. When I was in college we always had a pre-game meal 4 hours prior to tip-off and ate the same selection of foods every time, however, we don’t believe there is any ONE way to eat and especially a ONE “magic” pre-game meal.

Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration:

* Dizziness, confusion, lightheaded

* Dry lips, mouth and skin

* Physical and metal fatigue

* Decrease pace and performance

* Darkened urine (one of first indicators because the kidneys are very sensitive and they will let you know!)

NEED MORE ENERGY?

The simplest way to tell your players how important carbohydrates are to their performance is to let them know that they are the “fuel” for your movement and muscle activity.

Without them, they cannot run, jump, or play at a high level. What we must do as coaches and trainers is educate the players that food is not just food, but it is FUEL for the body. If they want to be good and but it is FUEL for the body. If they want to be good and excel, they need to eat right; sufficient carbohydrates is a big part of this process.
